To keep garden tools from getting buried in a wheelbarrow, separate small hand tools from the material in the basin. Use a dedicated tool holder, tray, apron or caddy at the wheelbarrow rim, and return each tool to the same visible spot after use instead of laying it on top of mulch, soil or yard debris.
A wheelbarrow is designed to carry material, not organize small equipment. During a typical yard job, the basin may hold soil, compost, mulch, weeds, branches or leaves. A dark-handled pruner or trowel can disappear after only one shovel load.
That creates three annoyances: you stop working to search, you risk dumping a tool with the debris, and sharp tools can end up hidden where you do not expect them.
An apron keeps selected tools on your body and is useful when you move frequently without the wheelbarrow. It works best for a small number of lightweight hand tools.
A tote keeps tools together but adds another item to carry. It works well when the tote can stay near the work area and does not need to move with every wheelbarrow load.
Clip-style wheelbarrow accessories are often useful for securing one or more long-handled tools along the wheelbarrow. They solve a different problem than storing several small hand tools and personal items.
A caddy creates a separate work area at the wheelbarrow rather than inside the load. The Garden & Tool Caddy is designed to sit on most wheelbarrows and provide handi-holes, a beverage holder and a 5" × 11" compartment for frequently used small items.
If your wheelbarrow follows you from one area of the yard to another, it can also become the anchor point for your organization system. Keep long-handled tools where they will not interfere with the load, keep small tools at the rim or in a dedicated organizer, and keep personal items separate from dirt and debris.
When the basin is carrying material, consider keeping these items in a separate organizer:
No accessory can reasonably be assumed to fit every wheelbarrow because rim widths, basin shapes and materials vary. The Garden & Tool Caddy is designed to fit most wheelbarrows. Its curved and straight sides plus leveling tabs give it multiple contact options, but exact fit depends on the individual wheelbarrow.

Before tipping or dumping a wheelbarrow, stop and look for every small tool you brought into the work area. If each tool has a dedicated visible return spot, the check takes only a few seconds.
The Garden & Tool Caddy was invented by longtime contractor and gardener Jim Fabregas after years of dealing with this same kind of problem. The patented design also works with most 32–55 gallon round trash cans, yard-waste bins and many garden carts, allowing the organizer to move between common outdoor workstations.
